Why to avoid Oily and deep-fried foods ?
Oil is commonly consumed to obtain fat.
Fat is an important nutritional component required for the optimal functioning of our body.
Fats are essential for many processes and functions in our bodies :
• to provide energy.
• helps absorb fat-soluble vitamins (such as A, D, E, and K).
• works as an insulator to protect our vital organs.
Refined Oil Refined oil is commonly used in our day-to-day cooking.
Let us evaluate this commonly used ingredient in our kitchens:
NATURAL – It is the most processed form of oil and is far from being a natural food, hence it is toxic for the human body.
WHOLE - Refined oil is extracted from whole nuts and seeds. While nuts and seeds are rich in nutrients and fiber refined oil is a fragmented product and is devoid of the qualities of whole food.
DIGESTIBLE - Digestive enzymes of the nuts and seeds are destroyed due to the application of high heat and pressure during the process of making refined oil. Without enzymes, it is difficult to digest.
NUTRITION - All the nutritional qualities of nuts & seeds are leached away in the multi-step processing and use of chemicals in the extraction of refined oil.
CONCENTRATED FOOD - Oil is a highly concentrated food. For example, it would take 2 cups of peanuts to make 1 tsp of oil. It is difficult for the body to deal with such foods & that’s why oil is often correlated with health issues. If not oil, how do we get the fats?
When making a conscious decision to eat healthily, we would want to add only healthy fats to our diet. Eating ‘whole’ nuts & seeds, i.e. in the form found in nature, is the best way to get its nutrients. If we want those essential oils, we should consume the nuts & seeds directly. There is a variety of nuts & seeds one can choose to eat - coconut, sesame (til), peanuts, almonds, walnuts, cashews, flax seeds, sabja seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, watermelon seeds.
There are many ways in which one can include nuts & seeds in their food:
• Make nut powders & pastes & add in curries & soups, this is a good way of incorporating nuts & seeds in kid’s food
• Add a handful to your salads - grate, roast, crush, add whole. Each variety adds a different taste
• Make nut milk
• Make nuts and seeds based desserts like laddoos and energy bars
